Today, we gather to acknowledge and honor the remarkable contributions of Myra B. Shays, the founder of our PFLAG Greater Providence Chapter, who passed away on Saturday, April 12th. For 15 years, she dedicated her life to leading our non-profit organization, providing unwavering support to families grappling with understanding and embracing their LGBTQ+ loved ones.
Myra’s tireless efforts extended far beyond the walls of our organization. She was a formidable advocate, educating the public on LGBTQ+ issues and relentlessly championing the rights of the LGBTQ+ community at the State legislature. Her persistence and tenacity were legendary; she was a force to be reckoned with and someone to whom "No" was simply not an option.
Through her leadership, countless families found solace and guidance during challenging times. Her passion for advocacy created a ripple effect, influencing societal attitudes and fostering a more inclusive and accepting environment.
As we reflect on her legacy, we are reminded of the profound impact she had on the lives of so many. Her vision and perseverance have left an indelible mark on our community, and her spirit will continue to inspire us in our ongoing mission to support and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.
In her memory, let us strive to uphold the values she championed and continue the work she so passionately believed in. Her legacy lives on in every act of kindness, every moment of understanding, and every voice raised in support of equality.
On behalf of PFLAG Greater Providence, we extend our deepest sympathy to her family. To Myra, rest in power, dear founder. Your contributions will never be forgotten, and your spirit will forever guide us.
