Why is PFLAG?
Who are we? We are the mothers, fathers, siblings, uncles, aunts cousins, grandparents, friends and chosen families of gays . We are the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered children of these families.

Why are we here? Because we love our gay children, friends and family, we want the same opportunities for them that are available to others -- no more, no less.

Homophobia, not homosexuality, threatens the family and society. In a society that is still learning to overcome hostility and accommodate diversity, PFLAG accepts and respects every human being.

What do we believe? We believe in supporting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered family and friends in their efforts to accept one another, and to cope with an adverse society. We believe in educating (but not judging) an ill-informed public to understand that homosexuality is not a choice, and that accepting diversity is the American way. We believe in advocating equal--not special--civil rights for lesbians and gays.

What do we do? We listen in confidentiality to family members who are troubled by a loved one's coming out and don't know how to cope. We listen to gays and lesbians who need the support of family but haven't yet found it.

We share our stories and concerns. We talk with people who have "been there" and might be able to help others on their journey to loving and accepting a gay child, or knowing how to say "I'm gay" to a parent.

We learn from speakers who come to our meetings to teach us skills we can use to help ourselves and others understand sexual diversity.

We act on any issue that touches on the support of our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered loved ones.

Who is with us? In twenty-five years PFLAG has grown to more than 400 chapters in the United States and overseas. We have a national office in Washington, DC, that helps the chapters thrive and gives us a recognized and respected voice in Congress and state legislatures.

Who may join us? All are welcome at our meetings. Confidentiality is assured.
